Expulsion armageddon looms for California, however not in L.A. – Los Angeles Times

28August 2020

To the editor: I agree with columnist Erika D. Smith about the desperate need to avoid more tenants in California from being evicted, but she omitted one very crucial reality for Angelenos: The Judicial Council of California's vote to end its emergency situation guidelines on expulsion on Sept. 1 does not impact the city's COVID-19 occupant security ordinances.Earlier this spring,

the Los Angeles City Council adopted regulations that prevent property managers from evicting occupants during the regional emergency period if loss of earnings is credited to COVID-19, as long as the tenant alerts the property manager in writing each month. Our regulation also forbids”no fault”evictions. This and other protections will remain in location after Sept. 1.

The city of Los Angeles has actually enacted some of the greatest renter protections in the state, and they will remain in place till the local emergency situation order is lifted. The state can and should act too. In truth, the last bill standing in Sacramento, Assembly Bill 1436, introduced by Assemblyman David Chiu (D-San Francisco), is imitated action taken by the Los Angeles City Council. the state and federal

level.Mitch O'Farrell, Los Angeles The author belongs to the Los Angeles City Council … Advertisement To the editor: For the record, landlords like me, a

senior living on rental earnings,

have gotten definitely nothing out of state's short-term moratorium on

evictions, so why is it time” choose the tenants”? Is it the supermarket's duty to feed people

for free throughout

the pandemic? Of course not, and it needs to not be the landlord's task to house the clingy free of charge either. It is the role of government and not personal property owners to look after citizens who have actually had their earnings impacted by COVID-19. On the other hand, the city of Los Angeles' securities are so loosely written that they have actually made it possible for the hustlers and cheats amongst us to just stop paying lease regardless of their situation.Richard Klug, Los Angeles
