A New Jersey chiropractor has been charged in connection with a string of robberies and attacks throughout 3 counties, authorities said Thursday. Erick K. Macias, 35, of Wharton, deals with charges of robbery, aggravated attack and weapons ownership in the criminal activities, which took place the past 2 months in Morris, Passaic and Bergen counties, according to court records.
“During the start of June, several communities in northern New Jersey experienced a series of strong-arm robberies that appeared to have been dedicated by the same person,” Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said in a statement.
The criminal offenses include: A robbery with a weapon on June 6 when the suspect went into a gasoline station on Grand Street in Paterson, pressed an employee aside and took $500 from the register prior to getting away. The suspect forgot his hat at the scene. It was referred to as a gray, snap-back hat with an emblem of New Jersey on it, according to an arrest affidavit.
On Tuesday, detectives from a number of municipalities, armed with a search warrant, robbed Macias' house in Wharton and arrested him after collecting proof, Musella said.
Macias, who runs his chiropractic business in Union City, was charged with one count of first-degree break-in, 5 counts of second-degree break-in, and a number of counts of intensified attack, basic assault, theft and weapons charges, according to Musella and court files.
The affidavits specify that after his arrest, Macias confessed in tape-recorded interviews to a few of the burglaries. It was not clear Friday whether he had maintained a lawyer.
Macias is being held in the Bergen County Jail, pending a court hearing on Monday, according to prison records. Civil court files filed in Superior Court of Bergen County reveal the chiropractic doctor had been experiencing financial problems over the last few years.
In August 2019, Bank of America sued him for an exceptional credit card balance of$ 35,838.92. The case was dismissed in February, court records reveal.
In December 2016, American Express-Mercedes Benz sued Macias for breach of contract and unjust enrichment for stopping working to pay a $4,789.48 charge card costs. The lawsuit was gone for an unspecified quantity, according to court records.
