N.J. chiropractor charged in spree of robberies and assaults across 3 counties – NJ.com

A New Jersey chiropractor has been charged in connection with a string of robberies and attacks throughout 3 counties, authorities said Thursday. Erick K. Macias, 35, of Wharton, deals with charges of robbery, aggravated attack and weapons ownership in the criminal activities, which took place the past 2 months in Morris, Passaic and Bergen counties, according to court records.

“During the start of June, several communities in northern New Jersey experienced a series of strong-arm robberies that appeared to have been dedicated by the same person,” Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said in a statement.

The criminal offenses include: A robbery with a weapon on June 6 when the suspect went into a gasoline station on Grand Street in Paterson, pressed an employee aside and took $500 from the register prior to getting away. The suspect forgot his hat at the scene. It was referred to as a gray, snap-back hat with an emblem of New Jersey on it, according to an arrest affidavit.

  • A burglary on June 6 in a second-floor hallway of the Avalon homes in Wharton, where– after being followed within– a lady was knocked to the ground and robbed of her purse, wallet, debit card, mobile phone, and $111 cash, according to an affidavit. The victim was required to a local hospital with a dislocated shoulder, cops stated.
  • A break-in June 7 in Parsippany-Troy Hills where the suspect struck one victim, stole $500 and after that dragged a second victim with his cars and truck while running away. Both victims were injured, cops said.
  • A break-in June 7 at a Route 46 gasoline station in Parsippany, where the suspect strolled into the attendant's cubicle while the victim was counting cash, pushed his head down and got cash. After a short battle with the victim and the victim's colleague, the robber ran away in his vehicle on Route 46 East.
  • An assault and robbery June 7 in Garfield, where a woman told authorities the suspect punched her in the head, knocked her to the ground and ran off with her handbag.
  • A break-in on June 8 at a gas station on 21st Avenue in Paterson, where the suspect got in the store, asked what he could purchase for $1, then required his method behind the counter, pressed the victim and took $200 from the register before getting away, according to the affidavit.
  • An assault and robbery July 7 where a woman was struck on the back of the head, fell to the ground and robbed of her purse by a male who ran off. The event was recorded on a monitoring cam, according to the affidavit.
  • On Tuesday, detectives from a number of municipalities, armed with a search warrant, robbed Macias' house in Wharton and arrested him after collecting proof, Musella said.

    Macias, who runs his chiropractic business in Union City, was charged with one count of first-degree break-in, 5 counts of second-degree break-in, and a number of counts of intensified attack, basic assault, theft and weapons charges, according to Musella and court files.

    The affidavits specify that after his arrest, Macias confessed in tape-recorded interviews to a few of the burglaries. It was not clear Friday whether he had maintained a lawyer.

    Macias is being held in the Bergen County Jail, pending a court hearing on Monday, according to prison records. Civil court files filed in Superior Court of Bergen County reveal the chiropractic doctor had been experiencing financial problems over the last few years.

    In August 2019, Bank of America sued him for an exceptional credit card balance of$ 35,838.92. The case was dismissed in February, court records reveal.

    In December 2016, American Express-Mercedes Benz sued Macias for breach of contract and unjust enrichment for stopping working to pay a $4,789.48 charge card costs. The lawsuit was gone for an unspecified quantity, according to court records.
