We've all heard the term “No discomfort, No gain!”, however how true is this declaration? I have been a sports chiropractic physician given that 2010 and I am constantly telling professional athletes that discomfort is your body's method of informing you that something is wrong. It's like the “check engine” light for your body. The more we neglect it, the worse the injury and dysfunction can end up being.
Let's say it's a muscle sprain/strain. Each muscle has a particular action in the body. A lot of muscles have villain and agonist muscles, that means while one muscle loads force, another one will unwind. If we have a sprain/strain to a muscle then all that deal with, or versus, that muscle will have an impact which can then aggravate the injury, or trigger compensation in other areas.
Most athletes currently have a competitive frame of mind, so a lot of times having an injury might just result in not being able to play their sport. Nevertheless, most of the time it's better to stop playing completely, and look for appropriate care and treatment, than to trigger more damage or aggravation of the injury. My goal is constantly to get athletes back to play as rapidly as possible, given that we can appropriately treat their injuries.
Do not neglect your discomfort … Pain is not a lifestyle! – Dr. Lisa Patel, DC, CCSP
